Understanding Conservatorship & Guardianship

What Is Conservatorship?

Conservatorship is a judicially created role where a person is appointed by a judge to be legally responsible for handling the financial affairs of another adult or child in an official capacity.

A Conservator is typically appointed when an adult is unable to physically or mentally care for his or her financial affairs without assistance or when a child is entitled to certain sums of money or other assets.

Setting Up Guardianships

A Guardianship is a judicially created role where a person is appointed by a judge to be legally responsible for the care, welfare and medical decisions of another person.

A Guardian is typically appointed when an individual is physically or mentally unable to make health and welfare decisions for themselves and needs help from another in these matters.
